Lagerstroemia indica ‘Purple Star’

Lagerstroemia indica ‘Purple Star’ brings a spectacular display of rich purple flowers from midsummer to autumn plus sensational autumn colour, offering interest for months. In spring, the dark green leathery foliage emerges flushed red before giving way to large panicles up to 20cm long of rich purple flowers with crinkled petals that last until autumn. The papery texture of the flowers means they last for ages and are nectar-rich, attracting bees and butterflies. Come autumn, the foliage blazes red, orange and yellow before falling to reveal attractive cinnamon coloured, peeling bark. Originally from Asia, Lagerstroemia indica is popular in Mediterranean gardens growing best in a hot, sunny, sheltered site in freely draining soil where it resists drought.
