Citrus medica ‘Cedro’ (Citrus Fruit)
Citrus medica ‘Cedro’ is an unusual Citrus distinguished by its impressive, rough-skinned fruit. The large, oval-shaped fruits can weigh up to 2.5kg and are highly aromatic. Each fruit has little flesh or juice but a very thick rind with a high concentration of essential oils, delivering an intense citrus flavour, perfect for enhancing drinks, desserts, sauces and marmalades. This historic Citrus also makes a fantastic ornamental tree, bringing an authentic Mediterranean feel into the garden landscape. Being one of the original clones from which all other citrus trees were developed, it is especially vigorous and flowers throughout the year. Clusters of waxy white flowers, flushed pink on the reverse, fill the air with a sweet perfume, attracting pollinators. The flowers are accompanied by large, strongly lemon-scented, evergreen foliage, enhancing its appeal. This frost tender tree is best grown in large containers on a sunny, sheltered patio for the summer months and moved to a frost-free position indoors from autumn to spring. Alternatively, it suits growing in a conservatory/frost-free greenhouse throughout the year. With its fascinating history, stunning fruits, fragrant flowers and lush, aromatic foliage, Citrus medica ‘Cedro’ makes an extraordinary addition to any citrus collection. Eventual height: 3m (9.8ft). Spread: 2.5m (8.2ft).
