Mimulus ‘Bonfire Red’ (Marginal Aquatic)
Most pond plants tend to be in the softer colour range, but Mimulus ‘Bonfire Red’ offers a brilliant splash of tropical colour to pond edges and bog gardens and a longer flowering season than other pond marginals. From June to August, it produces abundant, trumpet-shaped scarlet flowers with spotted yellow throats, resembling snapdragons. As well as their visual appeal, the exotic flowers are a favourite with pollinating insects. Mimulus ‘Bonfire Red’ thrives in moist soil or shallow water and whilst it can tolerate mild frost (down to –7°C), it is relatively short lived and often treated as an annual. Water depth: 0-15cm. Ultimate height and spread: 40cm to 60cm (16 to 24in).
