Schizostylis coccinea ‘Major’ (Marginal Aquatic)
Although often regarded as border plants, Schizostylis thrive naturally in stream beds and perform exceptionally well as pond marginals or in bog gardens, offering a flamboyant display that few other pond plants can match. From August to November, tall, upright spikes bear up to a dozen bowl-shaped, cherry-red flowers with shining petals that open wide, glistening in the sunlight. The stiff flower spikes bring strong vertical interest above clumps of relaxed, linear foliage. While most pond plants bloom in spring, Schizostylis coccinea ‘Major’ provides a much-needed burst of late-summer colour, making a superb choice for water gardens and moist borders alike. Ultimate height: 40cm (16in) to 60cm (24in). Ultimate spread: 30cm (12in).
