Squash ‘Futsu Black Early’ (Winter) – Seeds
This unique heirloom variety has been cultivated in Japan for hundreds of years and is favoured for its decorative, medium size, tasty fruits that each way around 1.5kg (3 lbs). Squash ‘Futsu Black Early’ begins rounded and of the darkest green, almost charcoal, with deep ribs and wrinkles. As it matures, the fruits turn dusky grey-orange and boast a delicious sweet and nutty flavour. The skin is thin and edible so no need to peel the fruits before cutting into slender golden-orange-fleshed wedges and roasting them until crisp and caramelised. ‘Futsu Black Early’ makes excellent autumn decor and will store for months after picking.
