Carex riparia (Marginal Aquatic)

Carex riparia, commonly known as Greater Pond Sedge, is a vigorous, clump-forming evergreen perennial native to the UK which is suited to growing in larger ponds. Reaching heights of up to 1.5 metres, it features tall stems and stiff, strap-like, glaucous green leaves that provide a striking vertical accent to pond margins and bog gardens. Flowering from May to June, it produces stout, upright spikes of dark brown flowers that add textural interest.Its extensive rhizome system enables it to spread rapidly, making it excellent for stabilising soil and preventing erosion. This dense growth also offers valuable shelter and nesting material for wildlife, enhancing biodiversity in garden settings. Ultimate height and spread: 1.5m (4.9ft).
