Grape ‘Purpurea’
An RHS AGM-winning variety, Grape ‘Purpurea’ offers exceptional garden performance, valued not only for its deep purple fruits but also for its striking ornamental appeal. The lobed, green foliage provides excellent cover for bare walls and transforms into rich crimson and purple hues come autumn, creating a dramatic contrast, especially against brick or stone backdrops. In summer, this grapevine produces racemes of green flowers, which are followed by an autumn crop of small, flavourful fruits. While the thicker skins and seeds make them less suitable for fresh eating, ‘Purpurea’ excels in making flavourful jellies and juices. The fruits also make a wonderful addition to autumn flower arrangements and table displays. Height of cordon-trained vine: 1.8m (6′). Spread of cordon-trained vine: 1.5m (5′). If untrained, the vine can reach up to 8m (26′).
